Will Smoking Hemp Show Up on a Drug Test?

Drug testing does not detect CBD, as it does not cause any intoxicating effects and is not an illegal controlled substance. However, people who use CBD may still fail a drug test due to contamination of THC or incorrect labeling. It is still unknown if passive exposure to cannabis smoke will produce a positive result on the saliva test outside of a study environment. According to an article published in American Family Physician (AAFP), the federal government sets the concentration levels of drug screening drugs in the urine.

Cannabis sativa is an incredibly versatile plant that is cultivated for a variety of purposes, from food such as hemp seeds, to hemp-based construction materials, to medicinal and recreational uses. In one study, volunteers who did not use cannabis sat in an unventilated room with five people who each smoked a cannabis cigarette. Though these tests do not detect CBD, some CBD products contain low amounts of THC, which could theoretically cause someone to fail a drug test. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that products containing more than 0.3% THC are illegal, and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) includes them as Schedule I.

Products that are rich in CBD are derived from cannabis or hemp, which contain the full spectrum of cannabinoids, including THC. People who want to avoid testing positive for THC in a drug test should purchase CBD products from reliable sources that can confirm that the product does not contain THC. It is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with using CBD products and to always buy from reputable sources.
